We do paper conservation treatments too!

Yesterday we had one of our conservators working on a graphite drawing on paper. The treatment plan was to reduce discoloration and staining, along with repairing some mechanical damage. The drawing presented quite a challenge due to an old lining disaster. During previous conservation the paper almost "exploded" into many pieces and was held together by a thick lining paper. Below you can see images of some steps of our treatment.

The drawing, with the old lining gone, it is ready to be reassembled and lined on appropriate weight Japanese paper.

Making new fills for losses with aid of the light box.

Applying wheat starch paste on lining paper.

Almost done!
