Results of the Andrew W. Mellon supported survey of photograph collections at the State Hermitage Museum were presented by Paul Messier in a symposium held April 27-May 1, 2009. The survey began with an opening seminar in St. Petersburg in October, 2007 and was followed by site visits to numerous collections during the Spring and Fall of 2008.
Les éditions Marval received the Prix du Mai for the book "Le Vocabulaire Technique de la Photographie." Among many authors under the direction of Anne Cartier-Bresson, Paul Messier contributed two articles on the history of gelatin silver paper and crayon portraits, August 2008.
With colleagues Valerie Bass, Detroit Institute of Art, Gordon Baldwin, Independent Curator, Denise, Bethel, Head of Photographs Department, Sotheby's, New York and Andrew Smith, Andrew Smith Gallery, Paul Messier moderated a panel examining the impact of the Lewis Hine scandal. Also, with Lee Ann Daffner of the MoMA, he presented new developments for dating of photographic prints at the Photographic Materials Group Meeting at the Center of Creative Photography in Tucson, January, 24, 25, 2009.
With Sheila Foster and Emily Welch of the George Eastman House, Paul Messier participated in a project to characterize and date the Eastman House collection of PowerHouse Mechanic prints by Lewis Hine. Results of this work are presented here. Fall 2008.
